As one of Massachusetts’ most desirable vacation destinations, Martha’s Vineyard can be extremely expensive. However, you can still plan a relaxing vacation by looking for budget accommodation in Martha’s Vineyard. There are several budget-friendly options on the island, including Martha’s Vineyard Campground, Martha’s Vineyard hostel, and Martha’s Vineyard motels. By saving on accommodation costs, you can still enjoy all the wonderful attractions that Martha’s Vineyard has to offer!
Martha’s Vineyard Family Campground
Located near many of the amenities of Vineyard Haven, Martha’s Vineyard Campground is a family-owned campsite that allows you to sleep under the stars surrounded by blooming blueberry bushes and towering oak trees. It’s been around since the 1970’s back when the island was a hippie heaven.
With tent sites, RV hookups, and even rustic wood cabins, you’ll have no problem finding the Martha’s Vineyard camping experience that suits your style. Even if you’re on a budget, you can still enjoy the variety of activities and amenities they have available for guests. Not only does Martha’s Vineyard Campground provide free hot showers, but they also have an on-site laundry room and camp store.
Roast hot dogs and marshmallows by the fire pit, play a game of volleyball or basketball in the recreation area, or simply relax and watch a movie using the high-speed wifi connection.
The campground is located on a main road with bus routes connecting Vineyard Haven and Edgartown. The closest attraction is probably the Alpaca Farm. The bike route runs alongside the Vineyard Haven- Edgartown road which makes cycling easy.

Martha’s Vineyard Motels
If you are looking for Martha’s Vineyard motels, there’s not much difference in terms of motels and budget hotels on the island. Most people cycle on Martha’s Vineyard anyway because the roads just aren’t built for lots of traffic. The Vineyard Harbor Motel is near “downtown” Vineyard Haven and Edgartown Commons is near “downtown” Edgartown.
Caveat: For many people, Martha’s Vineyard motels are not the Vineyard experience they are expecting.
Vineyard Harbor Motel
Just because you’re on a budget doesn’t mean you can’t be treated to a private beach and seaside views! At the Vineyard Harbor Motel, you can relax in your private room while being steps away from the spectacular harbor of Martha’s Vineyard.
In total, there are 40 rooms available. While some of them are relatively basic in terms of decor, the majority of the rooms include built-in kitchenettes or harbor and seaside views. In addition, all rooms include free wifi, cable TV, and private bathrooms.
You can easily walk to the Steamship Authority in the Harbor, as well as lots of restaurants and retail shops. Right across the street is one of the best cheap eats on the island, The Net Result. This shopping arcade also has Martha’s Vineyard Film Center, a pizzeria, our favourite barber, and my kids favourite toy store. In the same shopping center is Beach Road for a fine dining seafood experience and Rocco’s Pizzeria.
Pros for Vineyard Harbor Motel:
- Beachside views means that you can watch the ferry-boats whizz by from your window or catch the early morning sunrise over the horizon.
- Great location near The Net Result and walkable to town
- The minimum two-night stay only applies to weekends.
Cons for Vineyard Harbor Motel:
- You’re right on a busy road that connects the downtown islands
- The private beach is part of a busy harbor so not the cleanest.
Our friend who now has a house in Chilmark stayed with her family here the night before her house closing. Not that many places in Martha’s Vineyard let you stay for a night or two so her options were limited.

Edgartown Commons
Edgartown Commons is a two star hotel with 35 rooms located near some of the most expensive bits of Edgartown. The Commons encourages extended stay so there is a two night minimum stay for most of the summer (and on holiday weekends the minimum nights requirement is more).
The accommodation is divided among studios, one bedrooms and two bedrooms. The units are individually owned so they can vary greatly. The bedrooms are air conditioned. There is a playground, barbecue grills and a pool for residents use.
The location for Edgartown Commons makes it great for Edgartown. The tourist office is in walking distance. The nearest beach is Fuller Street Beach and Lighthouse Beach. South Beach is a longer cycle ride on a bike path. The restaurants and boutiques of Edgartown are a short walk or cycle ride away.
Fuller Street Beach which has returned after being washed out for a few years is delightful for children. With shallow waves from Nantucket Sound, Fuller Street Beach is where we took our toddlers when they were terrified of the big waves of the ocean elsewhere. Fuller Street Beach is also a great place to watch the fireworks that Edgartown puts on for special occasions like July 4th.
Pros for Edgartown Commons:
- VTA bus stop is nearby
- self-parking (a very big deal in Edgartown in the summer)
- great location from which you can walk/cycle into Edgartown
Cons for Edgartown Commons:
- weekly housekeeping only
- some of the units are dated and tired because they are owned by individuals
